History:
One of the facade stones of this fantastic home, built in 1884, bears the name Francisca, after Francisca Antonia Gersteling, who was married to dairy merchant Pieter Hegener (P. Hegener and Son). She became a widow in 1875 and had to care for several children, including her eldest son David (involved with the Posthoorn Church) and the future architect Jos Hegener.
Jos Hegener designed a warehouse with a meat-smoking facility for house number 4. The ground floor features an arched entrance flanked by two arched windows. Two more floors follow with the same appearance. All storage areas were closed off with wooden shutters. The only central loading door with its corresponding hoist beam was placed at the top of the facade.
The building, in the "Traditional Building" style, has remained virtually unchanged since then, although the smoking facility ceased operations long ago. The wooden shutters were replaced with windows. In 1977, it was offered as a "Very solid little warehouse with three empty floors." Now, it is a fantastic home brimming with character and comfort, in a beautiful location in Amsterdam.
Surroundings:
Buiten Vissersstraat is a quiet, one-way street, only 32 meters long and 7 meters wide, and centuries old; it appears on maps from around 1600.
