If the village of Holwerd on the dike of the Wadden Sea, in the north of Friesland, is already known, it is mainly because of the ferry to Ameland. At least 600,000 people make this crossing every year.
Holwerd, now a small dike village, may soon become a thriving coastal town.
Four residents are working on a plan to break the dike, so that Holwerd will soon be located on the seashore and become a tourist destination. The plan costs 150 million euros. About 2 km away you will find the famous "Kwelders " outside the dike, which have recently become a World Heritage Site. In wintertime this beautiful salt marsh area is the domain of thousands of geese that hibernate there. During spring tides in combination with storms, the salt marshes are regularly flooded.
In the summer, cattle graze on these Wadden marshes, this beautiful bird-rich area has the status of “Nature Reserve”.
Distances:
Due to the arrival of the "North-West Tangent", "The Hook around Leeuwarden" and the "Central Axis", the villages north of Leeuwarden have excellent access to the important traffic arteries of Friesland. Travel times to Drachten or Heerenveen are approximately 30 minutes.
