Until 1639, peat was cut in the polder and a pond was created between the Bovenkerkerweg (west) and the Amsteldijk (east). Later the water posed a threat to Amstelveen and Amsterdam. Therefore, on September 7, 1764, the States of Holland and West Friesland granted a patent for the further peat extraction and drainage of the lake. The drainage was done by eleven mills. The polder finally dried up in 1769.
