From Warehouse to Residential Complex
The three interconnected former warehouses 'Medan, Bindjeij, and Laboean' were built in 1895 commissioned by P.W. Janssen, director of the Delimaatschappij. The architect is W. Hamer. The warehouses are designed in a Neo-Renaissance style with elements such as stepped gables (with triangular and semicircular pediments), consoles, and yellow brick decorative bands. This storage building type resembles warehouses from the Golden Age. The former warehouse 'Medan' is located at the corner of Nova Zemblastraat and Houtmankade.
The three warehouses on the Houtmankade were converted in 1986, giving all spaces a residential and/or business function. As part of the renovation, the central part of the Bindjeij was demolished to make way for the atrium/gallery. The rear part of the Bindjeij was converted into a shared staircase with an elevator, making all housing units accessible. The part next to the warehouses, which previously provided direct access to the outdoor area, was covered with a flat roof with skylights and converted into the main entrance of the apartment complex, hall, and storage space. This moved the main entrance of the complex to the Nova Zemblastraat.
Surroundings
