Located in the vibrant heart of Amsterdam, just behind Dam Square, the Nieuwezijds Voorburgwal offers a rare opportunity. The Rijksmonumental property at number 284 is now for sale – a truly unique chance to own this exceptional home!
This stunning and characteristic building boasts abundant original elements, complemented by all the modern amenities required for contemporary living. Rarely do we encounter a property of such impeccable restoration quality combined with modern luxury.
The house features approximately 505 m² of living space spread across five full floors. At the rear, it offers a beautifully tiled inner garden. Additionally, a roof terrace can be constructed at the back on part of the ground floor; a permit for this has already been granted by the Municipality of Amsterdam.
This section of the Nieuwezijds Voorburgwal has undergone significant redevelopment by the Municipality of Amsterdam in recent years. What was once a busy thoroughfare, previously home to the renowned Postage Stamp Market, has been transformed into a quiet, leafy street with newly designed green spaces.
Just 50 meters away is the Wijdesteeg, where the entrance to a parking garage is located. In this garage, two spacious parking spaces, sold with the house, are included.
Layout
From the street, a charming staircase leads to the main entrance of the house. Upon entering the impressive hallway, you are immediately struck by the beautiful marble; both the floor and walls are crafted in white marble. The high ceilings perfectly showcase the elegant chandeliers.
At the front of the house is a formal room featuring an authentic fireplace. Behind the staircase is another formal room with views of the inner garden.
The property has been renovated and finished using exceptionally high-quality materials that perfectly match its architectural style. Original details have been meticulously preserved and/or restored.
The first floor includes a spacious master bedroom, a large bathroom, and a separate walk-in closet fully equipped with storage for clothing and accessories.
The second floor features two bedrooms, each with its own en-suite bathroom, as well as an indoor storage room.
The third floor offers a spectacular bedroom complete with a freestanding bathtub and washbasin.
The basement houses the kitchen, living, and dining areas. The bespoke kitchen is equipped with all the appliances one would expect in a modern home. This floor is accessible both directly from the street and via the internal staircase.
The garden of approximately 44 m² is accessible from both the kitchen and the living room. This tranquil outdoor space provides an oasis of calm in the heart of bustling Amsterdam.
History of the Burgwallen
Originally, the Nieuwezijds Voorburgwal was a canal-side defensive wall. Before 1385, the Amstel River divided the city of Amsterdam into two nearly equal halves: the Old Side with the Oude Kerk (Old Church) and the New Side with the Nieuwe Kerk (New Church). Each side was bordered by a defensive wall. Around 1385, new walls were built, and the existing walls became "Voorburgwal" (front defense wall) and "Achterburgwal" (rear defense wall) on both sides of the river. Thus, the Nieuwezijds Voorburgwal, Nieuwezijds Achterburgwal, Oudezijds Voorburgwal, and Oudezijds Achterburgwal came into being.
