A bit of history of the Voorstraat:
Noordwijk has a rich history, dating back to about two thousand years before Christ. The first traces of habitation date from that time. In 847 a Scottish Benedictine monk, named Jeroen, came to Noordwijk. He built a chapel and did missionary work. In 856 Jeroen van Noordwijk was tortured and beheaded by the Normans. After his death, a Romanesque chapel was built in his honor, which soon became a place of pilgrimage. The Jeroenskerk is located on the Voorstraat.
Of fishermen and bulbs.
The first inhabitants of Noordwijk were most likely fishermen. In 1444, the first vierboet / lighthouse (raised fire place) was built on the site of the current Grand Hotel Huis ter Duin. In 1474, Noordwijk had a fleet of 38 so-called bomschuiten that sailed from the beach. A hundred years ago, in 1913, the last bomschuit sailed. In the 18th and 19th centuries, Noordwijk grew into the most important herb centre of the Netherlands. Many of these herb gardens can be found on the Voorstraat. The herbs were mainly traded in Amsterdam and used for medicinal applications. After the cultivation of herbs, the cultivation of flower bulbs emerged in Noordwijk. At the end of the 19th century, approximately 250 flower bulb growers were active here, who together planted 252 hectares with tulips, daffodils and gladioli, among other things.

The last rope-making workshop disappeared from the Douzastraat in the twentieth century. The entrance gate to the company is a reminder of this. In addition, wealthy merchants and administrators built their homes along the Voorstraat. The Golden Age left even more traces in the church. For example, a church bell from 1672 by the Hemony brothers from Amsterdam hangs in the tower. At that time, they cast the best and most expensive bells in the world. In many b
