Binnenkant:
The Waalseiland, which was created in 1644 by infill, was given the name Binnenkant on the city side and Buitenkant on the IJ river side. The latter name was changed to Prins Hendrikkade in 1879.
The Walen were former (early seventeenth century) inlets of the IJ river on the old side (Oude Waal), where seagoing vessels were drained in winter. The Oude Waal became too shallow due to siltation. The Waalseiland was then filled in in 1646. The quay on the city side kept the names Oude Waal (old) and Kromme Waal (crooked because of the shape); on the Waalseiland, it was given the names Binnenkant and Buitenkant.
