The tower served the Zaan region's drinking water supply for a hundred years. In architectural history, this beacon is a unique example of a brick, cylindrical tower. The monument has since been restored, rebuilt and made suitable for offices and receptions. Peperbus Water tower Assendelft has an impressive track record. Starting in 1885, the tower served as a high-water reservoir for the Zaan region's drinking water supply for almost a hundred years. The shape of the original tower, a cylinder with a modest spire, earned it the nickname 'the Peperbus'. In 1922, the tower was raised to over 43 metres. Monument The water tower, including the 1922 extension, is of architectural-historic value. The tower is the oldest preserved water tower in North Holland. The tower has a still intact main form: a traditional brick construction in the shape of a cylinder. In its kind, this water tower is a rare early example. Also unique in North Holland is the presence of an Intze reservoir made of reinforced concrete. Since 1986, the tower has enjoyed monumental protection. Zaanlandsche Waterleiding In 1885, the Maatschappij tot Exploitatie van Waterleidingen in Nederland commissioned the construction of water tower Assendelft. In 1886, this company opened the Zaanlandsche Waterleiding for the supply of drinking water in the municipalities of Zaandam, Koog aan de Zaan, Zaandijk, Wormerveer, Krommenie and Beverwijk. According to article 12 of the 'Concessie der Zaanlandsche Waterleiding', the water from this pipeline could also be supplied to the municipalities 'Assendelft, Westzaan, Velzen, Wijk aan Zee, Oostzaan and the residents of those municipalities'. The water was obtained from the dunes near the municipality of Heemskerk. Although use was made of the water tower in Assendelft, in the early years the population of the municipality of Assendelft was not connected to the water supply system: the farmers from the surrounding villages felt that there was sufficient fresh water available. They had no need to connect to the water supply system. Expansion In 1920, the PWN went into operation. This company took over the Alkmaarse and Zaanlandsche Waterleiding. The water tower in Assendelft was temporarily taken out of service in 1921 in connection with the expansion and renewal of the high-water reservoir. The tower returned to service in 1923 until the year 1983. After that, the water tower was converted into a commercial building with several businesses and the Reinwater cellar into two residences in 2014. One of these two residences is Vaartdijk 20 B.
