Sint Maartenspoort is sandwiched between the river Maas in the west and the
railroad yard in the east. On the north side is the eastern driveway to the Noorderbrug the outer boundary, in the south is the Wilhelmina Bridge, the Wilhelminasingel and St. Maartenslaan. Wyck, Wyckerpoort and Limmel are surrounding neighborhoods.
The name refers to St. Maartenspoort, the originally medieval city gate that stood just north of St. Martin's Church.
Although today Sint Maartenspoort is counted as part of the center, it was not part of the historical territory of the city of Maastricht. Wyck's city wall followed the alignment of today's Sint-Maartenslaan. However, the Sterreplein neighborhood was built on the demolished outworks of Wyck, but nothing has been preserved in this part of the city. Only the street names Turennestraat and Hertellplein recall the military past of this area.
