History property:
Wanningstraat 12A has a rich and special history dating back to the early 20th century. The building was part of a larger complex that for many years served as accommodation for Deaconess nuns, who stayed here in retreat. It also played an important role in the history of the General Society for Young People (AMVJ). The AMVJ, founded to support young people, soon grew at the seams at 10-12 Wanningstraat. In 1919, plans were made for a new society building, made possible partly by a successful fundraising campaign that raised as much as 800,000 guilders. These funds enabled the AMVJ to expand further and continue its important work.
The Wanningstraat 12A building thus exudes an atmosphere of care and dedication, with a past that encompasses both religious and social initiatives. It represents a historic piece of Amsterdam that played a central role in the lives of its residents and users for more than a century, providing both care for the sisters and support for young people in the city.
