History of De Stenen Silo (source: Wikipedia) De Stenen Silo is a former grain silo on the Silodam in Amsterdam. The 19th-century silo was declared a national monument in 1996. The silo is officially called Korthals Altes, after Jan Philip Korthals Altes, a municipal councilor and director of the N.V. Maatschappij tot Exploitatie van Graansilo’s en Pakhuizen. The silo was built in 1896-1898 to a design by architect Jacob Frederik Klinkhamer, commissioned by Korthals Altes. Korthals Altes was the director of the N.V. Maatschappij tot Exploitatie van Graansilo’s en Pakhuizen. Korthals Altes had already advocated the construction of the silo in 1888 to secure Amsterdam's grain supply, in case the city would be besieged. The building thus became part of the Defence Line of Amsterdam. In 2000, this industrial monument was renovated and apartments were created.
