Description
At the height of the Golden Age, the wealthy Amsterdam patrician Cornelis Pauw had a 'new house' built on Herengracht in The Hague. His house is on what we now call number 19/19a. A few years after Cornelis Pauw, Michiel Pauw had his own city palace built right next to his relative. We now know that house as number 17. In the course of the four centuries, the appearance of the original buildings has of course changed, but the floor plans have largely remained the same.
Herengracht number 17 has been built and inhabited since 1647. It got its current facade in 1870. Monumentenzorg Den Haag once described Herengracht 17 as a 'building of general interest for the municipality of The Hague because of its beauty and its architectural-historical value as an exceptionally rich example of eclecticism in the architecture of the third quarter of the 19th century.'
The Herengracht is currently undergoing a true revival. The residential functions are returning, the canal has recently been restored to its former glory by means of beautiful paving and beautiful benches. Seen from the Herengracht, the modern ministries form a contrasting backdrop: contemporary versus classic. On working days it is mainly cyclists and walkers who move along the Herengracht. Pleasant tranquility reigns here on Sundays.
This monumental building was completely renovated in 2018, with all elements of historical value being documented and preserved. For example, the iconic windows with the many panes remained intact. Of course it has been modernized and equipped with contemporary insulation. Parking is possible in the Muzengarage. Its entrance is around the corner from Herengracht, on Brouwersgracht.
